If you want to drive from Istanbul to Sapanca with your own car, the route is actually quite simple: most of the way runs along the TEM motorway, and you can reach the lakeshore without entering city traffic.

Quick answer: The most practical way to drive from Istanbul to Sapanca is to follow the TEM motorway (O-4) towards Kocaeli-Sakarya and leave at the Sapanca/Sakarya exit. From the Asian side of Istanbul the distance is roughly 130-150 km and the drive takes about 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic. General Route from Istanbul

The most common choice from the Asian side is to join the TEM motorway and head towards Kocaeli. Follow the signs for Gebze, İzmit and Sakarya along the motorway; as you approach the Sapanca area, signs direct you off the motorway at the Sapanca/Sakarya exit. From the European side you first cross to the Asian side over one of the Bosphorus bridges and then join the same TEM route.
